"Winged Beast" by Rachel Favelle
Size: 5.9 x 4.3 x 2.7 inches
Medium: Ceramic Stoneware Wallhanging
The British colonists weren’t much impressed with the marsupials called bandicoots, when they landed in Australia, as they believed they looked ridiculous due to their long snouts. They nicknamed them the ‘zebra rat’ because of its black striped rump. More commonly known as the Western Barred Bandicoot, these creatures were not prepared for the colonial-era transformation of its ecosystem. There was an onslaught of imported British animals, from cattle and rabbits that damaged the delicate vegetation to the ravenous house cats that soon developed a taste for bandicoots. Some bandicoot species went extinct and by the 1940s, the western barred bandicoot, who originally inhabited much of the continent, only existed on two predator free islands off Australia’s western coast. This hybrid bandicoot sprouts butterfly wings, symbolising an escape from the impending threat of humankind.
