The Smoky Mouse (Pseudomys fumerus) is a small native rodent native to mainland South-Eastern Australia. In 1934 it was listed a critically endangered species, with a recorded 100 wild mice in tiny populations in the Central Highlands and East Gippsland in Victoria and state forest in New South Wales. Living in communal nests under the ground, these gentle little mice were given the latin name for smoky in 1934 as the male smells faintly like smoky burnt vanilla. While they are vulnerable to foxes and feral cats, the biggest threat to the species has been the loss of habitat.
