The Australian Fritillary Butterfly was once present in the coastal regions of South East Queensland, however there has not been a sighting since 2001. Characterised by its distinct black markings and laced appearance, these butterflies have declined in numbers due to habitat loss when swamps are drained for farming and urbanisation. It is estimated that this is just one of 26 Australian butterfly species at risk of extinction within the next 20 years. The lace markings on the wings are two fold, a reflection of the butterfly markings as well as the presence of human interference.
