The Dusky Hopping Mouse (notomys fuscus), a desert dwelling mouse, was presumed extinct in New South Wales from 1845. The species was recorded by Charles Sturt in 1845 between New South Wales and South Australia then not sighted again until 2003 in the Sturt National Park. Like its name suggests this mouse hops and lives communally in burrows, they are nocturnal and don’t need to drink water as their moisture comes from their food. Threats to this species include habitat loss due to livestock and feral cats which watch the burrows and can consume several mice in one night.
