"The inspiration for this piece was a quote by Anatole France; "It is well for the heart to be naive and for the mind not to be".
In some traditional versions of the tale of Snow White, the heroine, a symbol of purity and kindness, is tricked by the Queen/stepmother not once but three times. Each time the Queen comes for Snow White, she comes bearing beautiful and enticing gifts; a bodice that she laces up so tightly, the heroine is left out of breath; a poisoned comb for her luscious hair and finally, the apple.
And each time, the innocent Snow White is deceived by the Queen's changed appearance, who shows up as various kind and motherly figures ( represented with the Lily of the Valley pattern on the corset, a flower that, despite of symbolising purity, is toxic ) and falls for the offer of benevolent gifts risking her life.
I was reminded of a similarly cautionary tale, that of the Trojan Horse, a more famous example of how sometimes gifts and promises come with danger.
Have an open heart but also a cautious and inquiring mind is the lesson I've kept from tales like these."
