Of all the Studio Ghibli films, Howl’s Moving Castle is not my favorite, but the relationship between Howl and Calcifer is of a beauty and complexity that moves me. Knowing Miyazaki's passionate but tortuous creative process, I read this relationship as a sacrifice for the artist's total dedication to make his vision come true, the exchange of the soul or heart for the light of the star that will bring him the power to create beyond possible and imaginable. We willingly immerse ourselves in solitude until the madness of, in the midst of all the obsession, we lose the meaning of things, the meaning of ourselves. The search for perfection makes us aware of the beauty around us, moves us, inspires us, but we become blind to the beauty in ourselves, we let doubt torture us to exhaustion.
That’s why I called this piece ‘’Greatest Love of All’’, the most difficult, most forgotten and neglected love of all – self-love. In the whirlwind of seeking a greater purpose, of giving meaning to life, of existing for others, of coming close to creating something perfect, it is possible to find the balance that makes us see the beauty that lies within.
I think that of all the characters, these two, together, are the genius of Hayao Miyazaki.
